Changelog
Wednesday, 07/01/2009
xap/rox_filer-2.9-i486-1AL
Updated.
Major need to update was that Firefox-3.5 did not send data
for drag and drop into ROX the same -- had to tweak the code
a pinch. You can see my hack in /usr/doc/rox. Also updated the diff
in documentation for the Archiver code.
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-7cAL
Changed a couple toolbar icons.
Seems trivial, but the xterm icon really screwed me up,
and browser icon should be more generic (from Tango) mimetype icon --
so it goes with Firefox or Midori or whatever...
xap/gqview-2.0.4-i486-5AL
Recompiled, also changed .desktop file NOT to use -r (remote)
and therefore allow multiple instances. Also pulled
"Set as Wallpaper" from gqview menu.
ap/lshw-B.02.13-i686-4AL
Corrected paths to allow run by users.

Version 13.0.rc2 release
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, 06/30/2009
a/etc-13.0.rc2-noarch-1AL
Updated to proper version.
"Getting Started information now includes setting default Web Browser,
as Midori is now included in the base installer (although Firefox is
still the default.)
xap/midori-0.1.7-i486-1AL.txz
Added Midori Web browser to base install.
List of dependencies also added to base install include:
l/webkit-r44862-i486-1AL.txz
d/docutils-0.5-i486-1AL.txz
l/gperf-3.0.3-i486-1AL.txz
l/libsoup-2.27.2-i486-1AL.txz
l/libunique-1.0.8-i486-1AL.txz
xap/firefox-3.5-i686-1AL
Updated to firefox-3.5.
Also updated installer script to update firefox libs
location (listed in /etc/ld.so.conf) and run ldconfig.
l/kdelibs-4.2.4-i486-1AL
Updated, with Absolute customizations
(runBrowser, Thunderbird and xterm are default applications
opened by appropriate links.) Also, fake mime types and warnings
concerning missing mime comments were taken out. They showed up a lot
when running k3b from a term, as k3b is not really polished on
KDE4 yet.
l/kdemultimedia-4.2.4-i486-1
Updated
xap/k3b-r989155-i486-1AL
Updated, with lame mp3 decoder disabled as well as setup
disabled and custom icons installed in Tango. (Mad can be used to
decode MP3s.)

d/git-1.6.3.3-i486-1.txz: Upgraded.
d/subversion-1.6.3-i486-1.txz: Upgraded.
Monday, 06/29/2009
ap/gdm-2.20.7-i486-5bAL
Updated - corrected crash behavior to ensure that safe settings
were implimented and system reboots into console login. If chipset
unsupported this at least gets the user where they can either live with
basic settings or get to console easily and do something about it..
x/xf86-video-nv-2.1.13-i486-2AL
Updated to git version of 06/29/2009.
Was trying to get chipset suport for a 9300 chipset included on
an Asus P5N7A-VM. Still no support, but there had been some improvements
so I left in the updated module.(Proprietary nVidia driver works fine
with the chipset. Gosh, I wish they went open source..)
a/etc-13.0.0-noarch-4bAL
Updated initial video configuration script.
Changed the last pre-start message to reflect new behavior of system
if there is an Xorg start failure. (How it will automatically reboot
into console mode.)
Sunday, 06/28/2009
xap/abscreen-2.6-noarch-1AL
Updated to defer to proprietary display configuration utilities
if present. (ex. if nvidia-settings is present and xorg.conf tells
us that the nvidia driver is being used, then abscreen will start
the nvidia-settings utility and gracefully bow out.
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-7bAL
Updatede startup file which will update nvidia-settings if
user has set any screen settings through the nvidia utility
(like gamma/color correction.)
ap/gdm-2.20.7-i486-5AL
Updated - corrected path to "safex" utility for when GDM fails.
l/tango-icon-theme-0.8.90-noarch-2bAL
Updated. Created custom mimetype "text-x-script" icon (in png and svg)
with red square, to make it more obvious that file is executable --
so folks won't click in Pcmanfm without realizing it will RUN rather
than open with editor (Nedit)
xap/pcmanfm-0.5.0-i486-9hAL
Updated ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list
to send deb package files directly to Archive (to unpack)
Also sets non-executable text shellscripts (even .xxx)
to open with text editor (nedit.) Executable shell scripts are still
run -- hence the updated tango icons to warn folks.
(People tend to hesitate when they see red :)
ap/most-5.0.0a-i486-2.txz: Fixed doc directory, thanks to Ellington Santos.
xap/mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.22-i686-1.txz:
Upgraded to thunderbird-2.0.0.22. (* Security fix *)
Saturday, 06/27/2009
l/perl_Tk-804.028_501-i486-2AL
Recompiled with font antialiasing support
(Makefile.PL XFT=1)
You may notice the text looks nicer in add/remove programs
a/etc-13.0.0-noarch-4AL
Tweaked interface to addremove.pl
(font, color, size, etc.)
Removed redundant version of linuxdoc-tools from /d
Thursday, 06/25/2009
a/sysvinit-scripts-1.2-noarch-29cAL
Included /etc/inittab3
for use when Xorg setup fails
xap/pcmanfm-0.5.0-i486-9gAL
Removed warning message when a filetype did not include a
description. Was flooding stdout with warnings. Yuck.

xap/gdeskcal-1.0.1-noarch-6AL
Edited to limit menu and added script --
now started from clicking icewm clock and opens just above the clock
(regardless of screen size.) Click on clock while calendarr is running
will close the clock. Only one skin but very cool.
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-7AL
Integrated call to abscal (script for custom gdeskcal)
Striped out some older themes. Pre-compiled most preferences
to avoid having to change them on app startup.

Rebuilt
xap/htmldoc-1.8.27-i686-2AL
Updated conversion script (html2pdf) - can now handle some foibles
with filenames and even grab most page backgrounds. Still only
has good functionality with simple pages, but really excells with
help pages containing tables of contents with internal and external links.
a/etc-13.0.0-noarch-3AL
Edited setbrowser.py to ignore html2pdf as a possible browser
(which is the name of the updated html-to-pdf conversion script.)
Also pulled some old wallpapers, put new default into pcmanfm
(which controls the desktop bg.)
xap/pcmanfm-0.5.0-i486-9fAL
Updated desktop bg image for coming release, included JPG in pcmanfm itself
rather than in a/etc. Matches new GDM login theme.

Tweaks were to forgo avahi dependency (for online inkboard)
and changed all instances of Bitstream Vera fonts to DejaVu.
Saturday, 06/20/2009
a/etc-13.0.0-noarch-2AL
Updated "about absolute", pulling weird colors and putting in repository
information.
Added "wifi_on" script that appears in the new control panel and allows
easy transition to and from the use of wireless.
Added absDM (absolute download manager) which is a simple script for
Midori (on CD2) to use as a download manager. This option is already
set in the Midori package.
Updated setBrowser.py - properly sets the env. variable for the BROWSER
in ~/.bashrc
Updated runBrowser script, which sources the .bashrc file so that when
script is not called from the shell, it stil gets the ENV variable for
the BROWSER.

xap/abscontrolpanel-1.0.0-noarch-1AL
Added. System control panel based upon work by qcontrolpanel
by Thierry Deseez. This is a nice-looking qt4-based shell to drop
.desktop files into a user (.abscontrolpanel) folder. Easy to check out
the examples and add other utilities as desired. Also allows me to strip
down the icewm menu, making it cleaner and faster.
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-6AL
Set clock command to gdeskcal. Changing system time is a root-only
endeavour that now appears in the control panel.
Huge change in menu. Due to new control panel the ice menu has been
greatly simplified. Easier to navigate and quicker ice startup.
xap/pyNeighborhood-0.4-i586-2AL
Updated. Start script checks if Samba is running, if not directs user
on how to activate.
xap/htop-0.8.2-i486-1AL
Updated. Placed in new control panel, colors returned to sanity.
xap/absgamma-2.0-noarch-1AL
Re-written to accommodate use with icewm startup without regard to
logon type, other init scripts. Greatly simplified the code. I wrote
it for Absolute, I'll let other folks on other distros who want to use
it adapt the save settings to their needs.
xap/wicd-1.6.0-noarch-2AL
Bug fix. testing revealed that swiitching to wired connection left
junk in "wired-settings.conf" that prevented the daemon from later
starting. rather than track down the culprit (configparser, wicd,
hal, dbus -- whatever) I put code to clean out that junk before
starting the daemon or the client. Be glad to take it out after
solution is found.

l/sdl-1.2.13-i486-4.txz: Upgraded. Use SDL_image-1.2.7, and compile SDL
without esd, as linking to esd breaks audio within VirtualBox. Thanks to
Luigi Trovato for the bug report. Also, compile without arts support.
l/seamonkey-solibs-1.1.16-i486-2.txz: Added. This is a subset of the
shared libraries from the seamonkey package used for runtime support of
programs (such as rpm) on machines without X, or applications for X.
n/bluez-utils-3.36-i486-6.txz: Rebuilt. Edited rc.bluetooth to start hidd

xap/firefox-3.0.11-i686-1AL
Updated firefox - security and stability update.
xap/abiword-plugins-2.6.8-i486-1AL
Added the plugs for JPG, GIMP, different document format, etc
xap/k3b-r948463-i486-3AL
Updated - fixed a couple missing icons, actually "made" a new one for
"burn" (looks hot... ouch) and put the icons in Tango, where they belong
for us on Absolute. Habit I should get into for all apps. Will make things
neater, run just a pinch faster, and be easier for users/hackers to
figure out what is going on and make changes for fun and profit :)
xap/rox_filer-2.6.9-i486-4AL
Updated. This was just a tweak to BG image and folder (directory) icon.
I stare at this a lot, so I like it to look good.
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-5AL
Updated to correct folder icon used for pcmanfm. There is a definite
correlation between folder icons for pcmanfm and rox -- a peek at the
corner of the window or the task tray should let users know what is open
with which window manager. Brown for rox, blue for pcmanfm.
Sunday, 06/14/2009
n/wicd-1.6.0
Updated. Improved inet1.conf-clearing part of rc.wicd script (so as
not to blast other settings so easily...
Pulled part of Glade code that kicked warnings.
Defaulted pref for wirelesss to "wlan0" in preferences if no
interface was listed. (Solves a lot of detection problems.)
xap/rox_filer-2.6.9-i486-3AL
Updated - added "open with pcmanfm" to toolbar
Added mime icon for xz archives.
Also updated the "diff" files for source code in /usr/doc/rox.
a/etc-12.2.6-noarch-3AL
Updated - had neglected to update .gtkrc-2.0 for the root account
xap/pcmanfm-0.5.0-i486-9eAL
Changed "compression" to be handled by rox-archive --
felt that calling xterm with command was awkward and sometimes
crashed pcmanfm. Testing worked well with Archive.
xap/AbsVolume-5.0-i486-1AL
Updated to version 5.0
No longer in system tray (used 7-8mb of memory)
Now closes as soon as slider loses focus (click
on anything elsse and volume bar disappears)
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-4AL
Updated to put absvolume back in toolbar, out of tray
a/sysvinit-scripts-1.2-noarch-29bAL
Limited TTYs to 4
Had originally limited to 2 (saves a bit of memory)
Then I left at Slack default of 6 --
but memory usage forced me to trim back a bit, so I compromised.
Saturday, 06/13/2009
l/djvulibre-3.5.21-i486-1
Added - Used by the newer imagemagick
xap/rox_filer-2.6.9-i486-2AL
Updated - Fixed "theme" install so it complied with
the compiled location, tweaked a couple icons and updated
background settings (in .gtkrc-2.0, in etc package)
Removed debugging version.
a/etc-12.2.6-noarch-2AL
Updated .gtk-2.0 for new settings needed by Rox-Filer
.xinitrc edited to check for sound card presence before
chirping out teh "bb.wav" on startup (when non-graphical)
xap/icewm-1.2.37-i486-3AL
Updated - startup script for both user and root changed to check
for sound card before trying to run absvolume
Thursday, 06/11/2009
xap/pcmanfm-0.5.0-i486-9dAL
Recompiled - also pulled warning from vfs-mime-type.c
when mime is unknown (tended to clutter stdout)
xap/rox_filer-2.6.9-i486-1AL
Made further addition to Archive (formats.py)
to better handle decompression of xz packages.
Also updated mime type icons and rox-lib2 to v2.5
xap/AbsVolume-4.3-i486-2AL
recompiled
HUGE list of packages updated by Slackware and incorporated here.
Xorg has been updated and virtually all /x has beedn updated,

**** 12.2.4 RELEASE ****
l/qt-qt-r948357-i486-1AL
updated to QT4
l/kdelibs-4.2.2-i486-1AL
updated to kde-4.x
xap/k3b-r948463-i486-1AL
updated to svn K3B, which has been ported to QT4
Same VERSION as Slackware, but compiled without
external plugin LAME(MP3) which caused errors.
Madlib allows ripping audio CDs to MP3 if desired.
NOTE: I suggest using Asunder, however,
as it has more quality options.
xap/galculator-1.3.4-i486-1AL
replaces older calculator.
Hacked out source to ake the little app much easier on the eyes.
xap/regexxer-0.9-i486-1AL
replaces kfilereplace
xap/gonvert-0.2.20-i486-1AL
replaces convert. this is a unit conversion utility.
Several packages were moved to CD2 from base install to make room for
larger QT4 libs, Without docs they went from 50 to just under 29 MB.
The deciding factor in upgrading was the availability of new QT for use
by developers. We now have up-to-date QT as well as fltk, making the distro
much more developper-friendly. Below is the complete list of NEW files:

Diff files are in /doc directory if you want to build/play with code.

extra/scribus-1.3.3.12 - updated
Friday, 03/13/2009
Huge update.
Slackware bumped kernel to 2.6.28.7 and GCC, so much was recompiled.
Slackware also introduced several additional libraries used by KDE4,
but most of them have NOT been included in Absolute. As a consequence,
Slack's HPLIP is dependent upon QT4 (50mb lib), while Absolute's is
still based pon QT3 (10mb lib, and used for K3B, which is still not
ported to KDE4.)
See the ChangeSlack.txt for Slack updates, and below is a list of most
other packages updated specifically on Absolute. Note: with the new GCC
and kernel, this will shortly be turned into a new release.
As with Slack, the kernel and its headers, source, firmware and modules
packages have all been updated. GCC and related packages and libs. (Many)
pcmanfm recompiled.
ROX-Filer and Icewm both had tweaks.
Firefox updated to 3.0.7
ffmpeg used in multimedia installer uppdated to use version 0.5
k3b recompiled (due to new libdvdread, as well as ffmpeg)
INSTALLER now defaults to EXT4 partition format, although via manual
install you can select ext4, ext3 or reiserfs.
For now the Absolute kernel IS the Slackware huge-smp. No alterations have
been made, after testing and feedback from the forum we'll decide where to
go with that. I'm thinking of staying put until after the coming Xorg update.
There are other things to improve before working on temporary performance gains.

x/xdg-utils-1.0.2-noarch-3:
This update fixes two security issues. First, use of xdg-open in
/etc/mailcap was found to be unsafe -- xdg-open passes along downloaded files
without indicating what mime type they initially presented themselves as,
leaving programs further down the processing chain to discover the file type
again. This makes it rather trivial to present a script (such as a .desktop
file) as a document type (like a PDF) so that it looks safe to click on in a
browser, but will result in the execution of an arbitrary script. It might
be safe to send files to trusted applications in /etc/mailcap, but it does
not seem to be safe to send files to xdg-open in /etc/mailcap.
This package will comment out calls to xdg-open in /etc/mailcap if they are
determined to have been added by a previous version of this package.
If you've made any local customizations to /etc/mailcap, be sure to check
that there are no uncommented calls to xdg-open after installing this update.

n/bluez-utils-3.36-i486-5.tgz: Changes in the dbus version used in Slackware
12.2 (and in -current) to increase security had some unintended side effects,
and bluez was one of the things that broke. However, by using the dbus
bluetooth.conf file from bluez-4, this version of bluez can be made to work
again. The newer version of the .conf file has been merged into this package,
and changed from a .conf.new to a plain .conf to ensure that it replaces the
other version. Thanks to David Somero for the bug report and fix.

when restarting Pcmanfm. had neglected to stop using rox pinboard
by default.)

pidgin-2.5.2-i486-4AL
updated to include preferences for sound.
Sets method to custom, command to "aplay %s"

updated gimp for fixes, updated scripts
also updated support libraries l/gegl and l/babl
xap/gqview-2.0.4-i486-4AL
Just to remove the "remote" flag from its desktop file.
I actually like the behavior of opening more than one window
on gqview at a time to compare images. The "remote" flag made
this impractical.
CD2 -

Updated to include a kde.desktop file in /etc/X11/dm/Sessions
so users who install KDE from Slackware can choose "KDE Session"
from the list of sessions in the login menu (the default GDM login)
The list of session managers is shown when you click the "Sessions"
button on the lower left of the login screen.
If you choose KDE but do not have it installed, a few seconds later you
are returned to the login to try again :)
n/samba-3.2.7-i486-1
Updated for a security fix.
n/wicd-1.5.8-noarch-1AL
update fixes some issues that prevented proper
functionality for some users
Pulled Liberation Fonts as well as fonts_for_graphics from main install
-- now on CD2 under Gimp_Stuff
(All those fonts really slowed down install...)
Although OpenOffice sets Liberation Font as default,
font system on Absolute auto-substitutes Tymes. Easy enough to
change this to Deja-Vu Serif if desired -- just go under
OPTIONS > OPENOFFICE.ORG WRITER > BASIC FONTS
and change each setting to Deja-Vu, or whatever...
I'm honestly not too taken with the Liberation fonts at this point.

audacity/audacity-1.3.6
wxPython-2.8.9.1 (replaces older wxGTK and wxPython)
Monday, 12/29/2008
Added updated (wpclipart-7.1) installer to the download page.
All the clip art and wpclipper.py (viewer/editor) packages
are hosted on Ibiblio.
Wpclipper.py is NOT needed to view the clip art, but is an
extremely handy tool when used in conjunction with word processors.
The application was coded on and for Absolute Linux -- so if you
just want to try the editor you can always grab it from the
wpclipart.com/viewer folder, download it anywhere you have
permissions to and run it. Dependencies are already on
Absolute, and the script is self-contained in that it does
NOT use Glade or any other support modules.
BE AWARE: the complete installer is 747 MB (there are 23,000+
images in the collection.)
Monday, 12/22/2008
l/gstreamer and gst-plugins added for Pidgin sound support
under preferences/sound, change method to "command"
enter "aplay %s" in command box

****************************************************************
************************ RELEASE *******************************
Sunday, 12/14/2008
Release bumped to 12.2.0
No changes from the RC1 release
Updating to 2 repositories and SourceForge takes a few days :(
Monday, 12/08/2008
ivman, rox, icewm updated to accommodate audio program changes:
xmms replaces audacious
Audacious has proven itself too difficult to script via
CD autostart.
asunder replaces jripper
In case users have not noticed, the Java runtime is now on
CD2 (or /extra_packages in the repo) By eliminating jripper,
the only common use for Java anymore seems to be for online
gaming in the browser. Since most folks do not Pogo -- grab
Java from /extra_packages if you need it.
libmikmod also added in support of xmms
alsa-libs, alsa-oss and alsa-utils all updated.
Slackware updates to hdparm, man-pages, libgphoto2, network-scripts,
pidgin, wicd, ghostscript, gutenprint, pm-utils, gftp and the installers
initrd.img. -- See ChangeSlack.txt for all the gory details.
Also updated:
l/dbus-1.2.6-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to dbus-1.2.6.
l/dbus-glib-0.78-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to dbus-glib-0.78.
l/hal-0.5.11-i486-3.tgz: Slack modified hal.conf to use the plugdev group.
(Almost in line with Absolute, finally.)
Friday, 12/05/2008
n/wicd updated to 1.5.6
n/network-scripts-12.2-noarch-2.tgz
Don't try to reset ipv4 parameters in
rc.ip_forward unless /etc/sysctl.conf exists.
isolinux/initrd.img
Added lsscsi and pciutils
xap/icewm
updated to include grsync in menu if present
(was added to development in /extra_packages)
extra_packages
jre-6u11-i586-1.tgz
Upgraded to Java(TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition
Runtime Environment Version 6.0 update 11.
libraries/perl_TK-804.028_perl510-i486-2AL
perl_TK updated for use with tk-8.5.5
development/grsync-0.6.1
added grsync
Thursday, 12/04/2008
Updated appropriate files to "keep up" with Slackware.
Slack has "come in line" with our wicd use, so no more modifications
for Absolute are needed :) Only difference is that wicd is not set
to startup automatically (rc.wicd not executable).
This is because if you are NOT using wireless, you don't need to
run wicd -- which eats up about 20MB of memory.
Updated GIMP to 2.6.3 with extra gimphelp.org scripts and brushes.
Saturday, 11/29/2008
xap/Xarchiver
Added as default archive manager -
Archive (of Rox-Filer fame) is still present, as it is small,
fast and handles "Extract Here" option in Pcmanfm beautifully.
xap/pcmanfm-0.5-i486-6AL
Adjusted to accommodate Xarchiver as new default archive manager
Includes a change is source code also (hence recompiled)
xap/rox_filer-2.6.1-i486-94AL
Pulled links2 in sendto (no longer present on system)
Changed html mime to use "runBrowser" script rather than simply default
to Firefox... meant to do this a while ago.
Saturday, 11/29/2008
a/etc
Updated to once again put in library path for firefox folder.
(This had been removed when xulrunner was being tested.)
xap/htmlpage-2.4

firefox_flash_plugin-10.0.12.36-2AL
descriptions updated to avoid parsing error when using slapt-get/gslapt
libxml2-2.7.2-2AL
security fix
note that this is not the Slackware version as Slack is using an
older libxml2 -- this is not compatible (as several gtk apps are
compiled against it) -- so do not update Absolute version with
Slackware version.
xf86-video-openchrome-0.2.903-i486-1
This is BACKDATED version that Slackware has just released.
Slack did not previously include the openchrome driver --
and Absolute had been using the 0.3.0 version. Since Slack now
includes the module -- we will fall in step. If it does not update
using an auto-update utility (being an older version) the Absolute
version should work fine. If you find a need, you may have to
download the package and update manually.
BELOW is the SLACKWARE changelog we kept up with.
The libxml2 version difference for Absolute is noted above.
Compiz was updated in Slackware but is not included in Absolute.
Wed Nov 19 19:52:15 CST 2008
a/acpid-1.0.8-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to acpid-1.0.8.
/etc/acpi/acpi_handler.sh will be installed as a .new with future upgrades,
but since whatever version already installed on the system owns
/etc/acpi/acpi_handler.sh, it will still be overwritten one more time when
this update is installed. If you've customized your script, be sure to back
it up before upgrading.
a/mkinitrd-1.3.2-i486-4.tgz:
Fixed a bug where unless -F was the first option
given, other command line options would not override the contents of
/etc/mkinitrd.conf as documented in the man page.
Thanks to David Somero for the patch.
l/libxml2-2.6.32-i486-2.tgz: Patched and recompiled.
This fixes vulnerabilities including denial of service,
or possibly the execution of arbitrary code as the user
running a libxml2 linked application if untrusted XML content is parsed.

NOTE: These are some of the more important updates for X.Org.
For the last several days we have been building and testing
the very newest X updates, and it seems that the more intrusive
updates are probably best left to develop until sometime after
the coming -stable Slackware 12.2 release. Those will require
a lot of testing and some things don't seem to be quite there
yet. "X -configure" is hanging the console, DRI is not yet working
on all the hardware tested, and the new xorg-server will render
most existing xorg.conf files non-functional until several changes
are made.

kernel-2.6.27.6
kernel updated along with headers, modules and source
(source in /extra)
Also recompiled svgalib_helper, ndiswraper and madwifi
(which are kernel-dependent)
firefox-3.0.4
This is the Slackware build with Absolute prefs/chrome.
The xulrunner build changed again and required path
tweaking, again -- and neither mplayerplug-in not gecko-media
player would compile. Rather than beat my head against the wall
every couple weeks reconfiguring a moving target, I'll stay closer
to Slackware to eliminate headaches. So xulrunner was REMOVED,
Seamonkey was temporarily installed to build the gecko player (plugin)
and is now in /extra in case someone needs them to build.
etc-12.1.14-noarch-2AL.tgz
Fixed included multimedia installer
Had scripted it to install an outdated version of lame.
So this is a fix.
mplayer-r27957-i486-1AL.tgz
recompiled against newer support libs. Also recompiled/updated
gnome-mplayer and gecko-media player.

firefox-3.0.3-i686-5AL
Just 2 preference changes:
download directory default now ~/Desktop/Downloads
download manager closes when complete
(notification pop up is annoying enough)

--------------RELEASE ---------------------------------
Absolute Linux 12.1.13
Monday, 11/10/2008
Rebuilt for updated kernel:
svgalib_helper
ndiswrapper-r2673
madwifi-r3876
ath_pci no longer needs loading from rc.local
ath5k no longer blacklisted
kernel updated to 2.6.27.5
base CPU matches Slack at i686
Kernel has the usual Absoute customizations built into the Slack generic:
tickless
hi-res timer
voluntary preemption
USB HID
USB mass Storage
reiserfs and ext3
iso9880, UDF, MSDOS, VFAT, NTFS
windows logical disk management support
Java updated to jre-6up10
as well as all other Slack updates to date, with exceptions of KDE
packages and audacious.
Epdfview replaced by old standard Xpdf -- epdfview was broken with new
gtk, despite recompile. Has not been upated yet but since it is so
fragile (with large number of dependencies) I will scrap it in favor
of Xpdf. Xpdf is customized only in that link commands are run as
runBrowser (firefox by default) and gtklp for printing.
Pcmanfm updated to put Xpdf as the default PDF viewer. (In defaults.list)
Updated to AviDemux-2.4.3, patched and compiled to work with new x264
Mplayer updated to revision 27874.
Multimedia Installer updated to pull in updated versions of lame and ffmpeg.
libquicktime patched and updated to work with new ffmpeg and new x264
Added portaudio_v19_20071207
Updated to libsamplerate-0.1.4
Added libsndfile-1.0.18pre24h
Updated to sqlite-2.6.4
Updated to x264-11012008
icewm menu update -- links to online avidemux docs. Pulls last couple "links2"
references (uses newer runBrowser command)
gcalctool replaces xcalc as system calculator. (Under educational menu)
xcalc had a long startup delay after UTF8 implimentation,
doubt there is a fix forthcoming -- and gcalctool is reasonably small
and, although nicely basic by defalt, it can change views to advanced,
financial and scientific.
pysqlite package updated to correct improper installation of
documentation into the root of filesystem.
Pulled preferences files that caused problems with Deluge.
Absolute Linux 12.1.12
Thursday, 10/30/2008
Goodbye Latin1.
Due to need to set GIMP to UTF8 (or image name will not display in title bar,
plus other idiosyncracies...) As well as for HPLIP (or PPDs will not be found)
I have decided to make the leap to UTF8 in 12.1.12.
I know there may be some pangs due to this, but I have been building up to this
for a while and it is to the point that so little is broken by switching to UTF8,
the system will actually be harder to fix if we keep putting it off.
Gutenprint updated to v5.2.1
One code change to mention:
if browse is necessary because printer is not listed in Gutenprint list,
set to look for PPDs by default in /etc/cups/ppd
This is where cups and/or hplip will have extracted an installed PD file to.
Hplip updated to v2.8.9
User add utility adds users to lp AND scanner for now to ensure scanning use.
Also edited to enable running as root user.
Default xterm size bumped up in .Xresources file (was way too small)
Re-compiled GIMP-2.6.1 against updated poppler package,
to better handle PDF import.
Xulrunner/firefox is back. GTK problems solved, only trace of console-listed
errors occurred prior to updating flash plugin. Appears those errors were
generated due to missing Arial font -- (which will remain missing: ) Happily
the errors are too...
Stardict has been moved to CD2.
Feel badly it is not on base install, hopfully after some cleanup I can squeeze
it back in.
/etc/fonts/local.conf now uses DejaVu fonts as substitutes -- had used
older substitutes for the last few years, but DejaVu looks great (better than
liberation fonts and even the older subs of Tymes, Veranda, etc. I had been
using.) Finally got around to making the switch system-wide.
Sysvinit-scripts updated, pulling superfluous rc.local.new
(customized version is in a/etc package)
Also added more possible files to clear out of /tmp directory while booting.
I know this slows boot down even more (a pinch), but I really hate seeing
tons of garbage lying around the filesystem.
Flash plugin is version 10.0.12.36.
Re-compiled all glib/gtk libraries and dependencies (38 packages)
Updated to wicd-1.5.4
Added gksu and dependencies
Changed sudoes file (sudo package) to allow use of wicd via gksudo
Nedit updated. Custom build upon late-model lesstiff libs were not
without glitches, notably in cut and paste. Therefore the binary
for linux-x86 is now used. Much better behaved. Tabs set to 4 spaces,
color tweak.
HTMLpage updated again, this time just minor feature enhancements.
Indentation of tabs set to 4 spaces (usual with coding), and
highlighting a section allows TAB to indent it all at once. Comes
in useful more often than you might think -- especially if you like
to play with Python code.
Cable-ready deluge (P2P) settings incorporated into package, including
path/settings for blocklist.
Absolute Linux 12.1.11
Tuesday, 10/21/2008
facelift release:
Absolute now boots into GUI by default, rather than CLI.
Used customized gdm with theme based upon "applelinux".
Looks really cool, less confusing to newbies. Has an emergency
console, so hackers can "init 3" to drop into the console.
Gdm modified to not show any Gnome options and keeps Xresources
pointed to the Slackware defaults.
Pcmanfm has taken over the desktop from ROX-Filer,
allowing proper use of "Desktop" directory.
Also, pcmanfm has been modified again, adding a menu item
when right-clicking on the desktop to set screen resolution
(via absScreen.) Background image/color etc. are set-able from
pcmanfm properties interface.
setsystemfont.py script updated to acommodate restarting pcmanfm
when updating system font setting.
HTMLpage updated with a fix to eliminate "undo" blanking document
when you undo one too many times. Was recoverable, but very annoying.
(And scary, when first seen!)
GTKpod added... for the iPod fans.
Icewm updated to eliminate SETTINGS > BACKGROUND COLOR
Is settable from pcmanfm. (Was originally hooked to ROX-Filer.)
New default theme. Absolute was picked on in a review as looking like
Windows 98. I felt bad. But don't worry, we're not going translucent,
fading, resource-hungry, eye-candy. Just a more "modern" color scheme.
"Absolute Dark" -- Look who's bad, baby.
Dumped some old themes.
Cleaned out some superfluous documentation from packages putting things
like +1MB changelogs, developer APIs, etc. Need the space.
Absolute Linux 12.1.10
(the release de jure) Thursday, 10/16/2008
Uploaded to ibiblio, other links to follow.
A Bug fix release:
GIMP-2.6.1, is a bug fix. gimp-remote was not working, among a few
other smaller problems.
Replaced packages for libgnomecanvas, libgnomecups, libgnomeprint,
libgnomeprintui -- due to printing problems, likely due to compiling against
outdated libgnomecanvas.
Updated Firefox to Slack version -- xulrunner-based compile of FF had
problems with jpg background images and also some console warnings --
might also have been based on bad canvas? No xulrunner means more space in
the meantime and re-introduced acidrip and gcstar to base install, along
with a few more games.
Fixed rox-filer send-to item for filetype HTML to "runBrowser", rather
than assume firefox. Also took out send-to for links2 browser, which no
longer gets distributed with Absolute.
Updated to keep up with Slack-current. Most notable are the constant
glibc updates Smile
Monday, 09/24/2008
Tested HPLIP and DID NOT play well with Gutenprint drivers.
Removed HPLIP, again. Gave me the space to...
Added Acidrip and GCStar to base install along with all their
perl module dependencies (which I put into /absolute/d
Also reinstated the KDE games libs and few games.
HTML documention updated to open browser with "runBrowser"
command, rather than loading links2. Therefore will open with
system browser if user has selected this, otherwise will use Firefox.
Links has been removed. Midori can be used as second/alternative
browser from CD2 -- as I think that Webkit-based alternative is
much more usable and is quite actvely under development. Also Midori
ties in with the system very well with use of GTK, mplayer and HTMLpage.
(Just not feature-complete yet...)
Jripper updated to 2008.06
Recompiled madwifi (r3867), svgalib_helper and ndiswrapper
for current kernel.
For CD2, updated all perl-mods, Gcstar and Acidrip.
added: djbfft-0.76-i686-1as.tgz
Updated:
a52dec-0.7.4-i486-2AL.tgz
audiofile-0.2.6-i486-2AL.tgz
avifile-0.7.45-i486-2sl.tgz
libfame-0.9.1-i486-2sl.tgz
libmpeg3-1.7-i686-3sl.tgz
libquicktime-1.0.3-i486-1AL.tgz
lzo-2.03-i486-1sl.tgz
normalize-0.7.7-i486-1AL.tgz
transcode-1.0.6-i486-1AL.tgz
- transcode now suports a great many more file types
linHDD.py updated to 0.7.
Eliminates the "cannot rstrip a nonetype" error.
Improved tmp file cleaning in /etc/rc.d/rc.S in sysvinit-scripts.
/etc/profile.d/lang.sh now includes:
export LC_ALL=$LANG.UTF8
Updated ff.py (file-finding utility)
Better-looking UI, option to skip hidden and cache files, updated
"open-with" menu to use latest applications.
Updated pcmanfm to version 0.5.0.
Includes "Search-In..." function for displayed folders
(opens new ff.py, the file-finding utility.)
Also a "Backup" menu item for files. makes a quick filename.bak.
Earlier addition of "Copy path to clipboard" still there (I love it.)
Recompiled epdfview with new poppler lib.
Fixed it as default viewer with pcmanfm.
Pidgin reintroduced from CD2 back into base install, with all locale files.
Updated GIMP to customised 2.4.7 (scripts, themes, settings),
now also includes locale files as well as all the extra brush and
pattern files I had previously included in the GIMP_data_extras package.
Deluge and its dependencies are now on base install CD, Avidemux2 also.
(P2P client and video editor, respectively.)
Kernel Source package moved to CD2, due to space contraints.
In recent months there has been an extreme need for
space. Putting developer docs separate on CD2 seemed OK, but after having to
put the language files for GIMP and Pidgen on CD2 as well, I think things might
have gone a bit too far... it is now to the point of losing apps or libraries,
or move the kernel source to CD2 -- which seems the more tolerable solution.
This will give us the room to restore locale folders for languages on GIMP and
Pidgen as well as enabling inclusion of additional libraries or applications on
the installer CD.
Multimedia Installer updated. (Part of a/etc package)
If user chooses to install, libdvdcss version searched for is 1.2.10,
also has second location to pull (Slacky.eu) if videolan site is down.
Xulrunner recompiled, version updated to 1.9.0.1 with tweaks to compiler settings.
Firefox recompiled on top of this as well. Thunderbird now compiled on this also.
(But located on CD2, as Sylpheed is still the default mail program.)
Updated to keep up with Slackware-current. GCC-4.2.4, kernel-2.6.24.7,
lots of recompiles. BIG NOTE: Upon compiling the custom kernel for Absolute,
I have changed the base-CPU to a Pentium-II (up from Pentium Classic.)
Bottom line -- Absolute running Hal/dbus, apps like firefox and k3b, is not
really appropriate or capable of accommodating P-I processors. There are distros
which specialize in lighter-weight apps but I feel Absolute is into more modern
software -- just with less UI overhead and more appropiate for first and
second-tier equipment, not antiques. (I have a hard time getting working parts
of Pentiums to test on...) This also eliminates the need for me to recompile
the kernel twice for each release... without any other outside developers I
simply do not have the time to play with anything fun if I have to recompile
everything over and over...
Edited hplip-2.8.7 to conform to Absolute's "root-only setup" philisophy.
Made hplip run so that root CAN install/delete a printer, users cannot.
(Not just a security issue -- do IT guys or parents really want to help each
and every user/kid set up a printer?)
Updated GTK, pygobject and added gtksourceview as well as pygtksourceview.
These were done in part to accommodate latest Midori build (on CD2), even
though the native "view-source" is not working yet. Midori has been modified
for Absolute to open HTMLpage to view source and icons fixed -- but since this
Midori still has several features missing, it will remain on CD2 for now.
HTMLpage updated to version 1.0, now uses gtksourceview for syntax highlighting
and improved undo/redo functionality. Added Desktop file. Pops open with page
from Midori's "view-source" menu item. Dumped splash page for speed.
Updated audacious audio player,
simply adding an eq setting for headphones...
newer audacious packages are giving me trouble with CD-Audio playback,
so why break everything if I have no trouble with the version in Absolute?
mcs updated to 0.7, package now called libmcs
Added ogg video to flv converter
(useful to convert recordmydesktop ogg files to YouTube flash videos)
Also corrected ffmpeg check in flv2avi
Added TI calculator connection program (TILP) and support libraries (
Added zd1211 firmware (usb wireless chipset support, overlooked previously)
AbsVolume updated with button to open mixer.
(qamix added -- not the latest mixer but works well with our QT, so why not?)
Updated Also libs (lib, oss, utils)
Absolute Linux 12.1.06
Updated Firefox packaging to 2AL,
had to fix permissions on /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.1/firefox script.
(Would not run for user)
Updated lilo package to correctly install lilo when using the
installation's "AutoInstall" option.
Updated:
a/openssl-solibs-0.9.8h
l/libxml2-2.6.32
l/libxslt-1.1.24
l/pcre-7.7
n/openldap-client-2.3.43

Friday, 07/25/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1.05
Redesigned installer to include an "autoinstall" option
which will auto-partition drive and take care of lilo installation.
The lilo package in /absolute installer has also been updated to accommodate
(/var/log/setup/setup.liloconfig edited.)
Corrected internal "name" of links2.desktop file
absgamma.py (utility to adjust gamma of monitor)
updated so that when trying to be run when using the vesa driver
user will be told the utility will not work and gracefully close.
Java updated to jre-6u7
gnome-icon-theme added for compatability with some apps,
avoids warnings and errors if a new app is added that uses the icons
yet does does not do proper error trapping.
Svgpage moved to CD2 (does artsy conversions of SVG to PNGs.)
Saturday, 07/19/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1.04
etc-12.1.04-noarch-1AL:
Created 2 new scripts to handle the Default Web Browser.
setbrowser.py lets user choose from all browsers installed
(any app that has a .desktop file installed that handles text/html mimetype)
Sets Environmental Variable BROWSER along with defaults.list for pcmanfm.
runBrowser script is what now launches Firefox or any other browser on system.
midori browser is on CD2 for 12.1.04 - uses Webkit and is very fast, lightweight.
May switch default installed browser to Midori in future -- feedback appreciated.
Re-packaged links2 browser with .desktop file and associated 48x48 icon.
Rox updated to rox_filer-2.6.1-i486-92AL
...just a "getting started" tweak
Removed old rox-filer duplicate install package.
Some games (including KDE games) were put back into basic installer.
CUPs (service for printing) is now set to run by default Uses modest resources
and when it was off it frustrated many folks when they could not get their printer
working...
Friday, 07/17/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1.03
Updated firefox to 3.0.1
Updated nasm, dnsmasq and e2fsprogs, as well as
ati, nv and intel video drivers.
Added video drivers for Mach64 and r128.
Mesa updated to 7.0.3 (bugfix release)
Removed HPLIP for the time being.
(Setup through hp-setup or toolbox would not work.
CUPs setup has been flawless, so bye-bye for now..)
tweaked .desktop file for avidemux and ROX sendto handling
corrected unneeded import of wx in absAddUser.py script
(causing it not to run on default install without wxPython installed)
Thursday, 06/10/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1.02
Firefox updated to 3.0.
This necessitated installation of xulrunner-1.9, which can
also subsequently be used to build firebird and other applications.
Spent a couple days tweaking settings for performance and got mailto
links to work, finally. (Set in mimetypes.rdf instead of prefs.js.)
Mplayerplug-in on FF3 is a wash -- had to go with gecko-mplayer.
For this Orbit2 and gconf2 were installed with gnome-mplayer and
gecko-mplayer. Not quite as fast, but it tested well.
Updated pcmanfm with much more robust handling of filetypes
by default. Defaults.list now includes many more mime types.
Added isomaster for working with cd image files.
Added kfilereplace (was previously on CD2)
Added a few games (monsterz, lbreakout2, njam and bumprace)
Added font-bh-lucindatypewriter (100 and 75 dpi)
Added scripts and desktop files to convert flv and ogg video to avi
Added lshw, along with script (run_lshw) that outputs in
HTML format and opens the results in Links2, and also deletes
the temporary html file. The gtk version of lshw just was not
working well enough...
Updated to xorg-server-1.4.2
No longer need to patch and recompile xorg-server for use with
icewm(there had been keyboard errors, previously.)
updated to gnutls-2.2.5, security related
updated Bind-9.4.2-P1, security related
updated Pidgin-2.4.3
wxPython, wxGTK and pAgenda moved to CD2
(I had re-written the utilities that used wx to use pyGTK)
Fox (toolkit) and fluxbox moved to CD2
Also added/updated the following for support in mplayer:
(recompiled mlayer from subversion code 07/03/2008):
amrnb-7.0.0.1-i686-1as.tgz
amrwb-7.0.0.2-i686-1as.tgz
jack-audio-connection-kit-0.109.2-i486-2sl.tgz

speex-1.2beta3-i486-1dav.tgz
twolame-0.3.12-i486-1as.tgz
Monday, 06/02/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1.01
wicd updated (wicd-1.4.2-i486-2AL)
includes changes to daemon.py and networking.py to accommodate
Slackware networking scripts without altering them. Now
works despite presence of other networking interfaces.
ALSO added a patch to gui.py, to not allow empty entry
of network name in wired interface setup -- this led to
crash of daemon upon restart.
5ball gets a new high-contrast theme,
(requested by a visually-impaired user.)
absServices.py updated
(utility to set startup programs/daemons)
changed from wxGTK to pyGTK + code cleanup
flv2avi re-introduced. Added desktop file and dialog if
ffmpeg is not installed (which it requires.)
mkinitrd-1.3.2-i486-3 (updated by Slackware) Initialize RAID
earlier so that the combination of RAID+LUKS+LVM works.
kdelibs updated to 3.5.9 with Absolute modifications
K3B updated to 1.0.5, include plugin support for ffmpeg use
(if the multimedia installer is used.)
Multimedia installer updated
Fixed ffmpeg not installing properly.
uses latest ffmpeg (r13628)
installs ffmpeg as a shared lib for use with other apps\
Couple performance tweaks
1.) to look out for if running a server: boot drive on install
is set with "noatime" flag.(This speeds up the average machine
quite a bit, especially if using an older drive.)
2.) /etc/sysctrl.conf now includes "vm.swappiness=20", which
can lead better system responsiveness, and very helpful in getting
enabling laptops to sleep.

Absolute Linux 12.1 FINAL
Updated interface for ff.py (file finding utility)
pcmanfm updated to 4.1.1,
also added file finding utility to tools menu (Ctrl + F)
gslapt and slapt-get updated
Tuesday, 05/05/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1
Updated kernel to Patched to fix a security issue in fs/dnotify.c
also added tickless and high-res timer support
[So installer and installed kernels both updated along with
installer initrd.img. Also needed to recompile svgalib_helper,
ndiswrapper and madwifi.]
Firefox version backed-up to stable (2.0.0.14)
added:
usbview (utility to check out attached USB device information)
pycups
libgphoto2 and gphotofs to use with ivman,
(so now PTP cameras are auto-mounted)
Updated pcmanfm to version 0.4.0 (same tweaks applied)
Update gslapt and slapt-get
Updated deluge (and boost) packages on CD2
pygame and numpy updated (for gaming), some new games included for CD2
the KDE game libs and few games are now on CD2
Updated other packages to keep up with Slack 12.1 release
Tuesday, 04/15/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 rc2
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Kernel installer (initrd.img) updated to accommodate Pentium MMX
(Installed kernel was MMX-compatible, but installer was not...)
Kernel recompiled to match updated Slackware kernel,
but included Absolute optimizations.
Abscreen (screen resolution/refresh rate adjuster) updated
to allow setting refresh rate when using Nvidia proprietary driver.
Was previously disabled due to inconsistencies between the
utility setting (via xrandr) and Nvidia reported refresh rate.
Monday, 04/03/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 rc1
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Since Xorg and ICEWM do not play well wit Ctrl+Alt+backspace,
I have temporarily made Ctrl+Alt+Esc force-close X for us.
Added pdfEdit to editors
kernel recompiled, had errors AFTER recompiling madwifi,
might have been a corrupted file from a bad burn -- but
did ot take a chance.
Changed font used in graphic login for "Just in Case" --
(Little buttons that give the user the ability to shutdown
or drop into the console.) Was hard to read...
This is an update to package x/xdm.
Pulled /etc/profile.d/oo.sh from etc package.
Is included now with the OpenOffice package on CD2,
so no worry keeping up to date or mixed-up paths.
(This file puts "/opt/openofficex.x/program" into path
so you can start the programs without hassle.)
Installer initrd.img sets mount for temporary memory (/dev/shm)
in /etc/fstab, but with stricter options than Slack:
defaults,nosuid,noexec,rw
Might not stop abuse, but every little bit helps...
Lilo backdated to non-boot image version. Too problematic.
HPLIP and CUPS are versions 2.7.10 and 1.3.3, respectively,
in order to keep a working HPLIP version.
Otherwise, packages updated to coincide with Slackware Current
Monday, 03/31/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta91
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Gearing up for final 12.1 release...
Upgraded kernel to 2.6.24.4 (with customizations)
updated all packages to sync with Slack Current
EXCEPT for KDE/QT (main use in Absolute is for K3B,
waiting for KDE4 in Slack so added packages will work)
Tuesday, 03/18/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta9
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
pcmanfm (modified for Absolute) takes the place as default file manager
ivman used to autoplay media (audio CD and DVDs)
kernel is a modified 2.6.24.3 (Slackware generic with several additions)
90+ packages updated
Friday, 02/22/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta8
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Documentaion reconstructed. Small scripts installed into
/usr/local/bin/doc (now in path set by /etc/profile) are
installed when individual docs are... therefore they only
show up in the icewm menu when they are actually present.
Therefore all packages with documentation were rebuilt.
Firefox is 3.0b4 (Minefield)
-- this is a beta, but so are we :) Unlike 3.0b3, it has
not given any errors in early testing.
Sylpheed updated to 2.2.8
gtkspell installed to suppport spell-checking in Sylpheed
Icewm was updated to 1.2.35
menus rebuilt to support new documentation model
New default theme. (Absolute Cool - thinner titlebars and cleaner look.)
kernel setting for CD locking changed in new file: /etc/sysctl.conf
Now you can push button on CD-ROM without calling umount
or clicking on "eject"...
find_installed script utility fixed
setDate.py and gdeskcal both internally modified to prevent
the running of multiple instances.
Tuesday, 02/12/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta7
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Updated to Slackware's version of patched kernel - 2.6.23.16
updated some other packages, most notably glibc jibe with

Saturday, 02/09/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta5
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
recompiled mplayer -- the source of the mplayerplug-in
failures when using firefox. (Had originally compiled
newer code from CVS... mistake.)
Updated multimedia installer to use more recent version of
mplayer codecs (Oct '07).
Recompiled OpenChrome driver, built from SVN 20080207
Included neon (libneon) -- used by subversion (SVN) on CD2
(and perhaps others...) Also updated subversion on CD2 to v1.4.6.
Menu for Icewm re-arranged slightly, and also includes a RUN item,
which will run the command entered in a separate process.
xorg-server patched to avoid problem with icewm.
The bug only occurs if Xkb triggers an autorepeat. In this case,
XkbHandleActions overwrites dev->public.realInputProc with
EnqueueEvent. When the device is unfrozen, the realInputProc is
written back to the processInputProc and the whole thing craps out.
patch is to /include/xkbsrv.h
this is a temporary hack, as it has the reprecussion of causing
Xorg to crash on icewm after, for instance, Ctrl+Alt+Del, don't
log out, but later hit the backspace key. To AVOID his completely,
xorg.conf now includes "DontZap" option in ServerFlsags section.
So all functions normally, without any craashes or frezes,
but Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, which usually can be used to close Xorg, is
not available.
Hopfully this awkward work-around will be unneeded soon...
Thursday, 02/03/2008:

Corrected lack of in-kernel support for ext3/ext2 filesystems
Thursday, 01/31/2008:
Absolute Linux 12.1 beta2
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
Too many individual packages to list -- this is another new kernel
(2.6.23.12) which I compiled with tickless (for laptop lower-power,
for battery life extension) Also switched preemption model to low-latency
desktop (from more server-centric setting -- should have done that a while
ago...) plus the usual extra includes instead of modules for user-needed
stuff like MMC (SD) cards, USB MASS STORAGE, NTFS, etc.
Other major change is for wirteless -- switched to WICD. Be sure to
enable WICD daemon when installing if you want to use wireless
(of course, you can always later enable it on startup via the
SERVICES menu.) When you do this you will see the WICD tray icon
next to the clock when using ICEWM (the default window manager.)
You can configure WICD from there. (Supposed to be easy, but I do not
have wireless to test with -- get back to me on this, somebody!)
As I said, too many individual packages to list --
but what follows are a few highlights:
GIMP-2.4.3
Bug fixes to the 2.4 series --
and I included all the SCRIPT-FU updates I worked on on gimphelp.org.
Firefox-2.0.0.11
Plus newer adobe flash plugin as well as recompiled mplayerplug-in,
putting plugins into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins instead of versioned
Firefox library directory.
GTK2-2.12.4
Alond with updates to the chain folowing this -- cairo, pycairo, pango,
etc. Nicer icons, anyway...
libpng
Security fix
... and about 100 other packages.
Wednesday, 10/31/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.1.0 beta1
BASED UPON SLACKWARE CURRENT
More than half the distro has been recompiled.
After several sleepless nights I can confidently say this is the
most stable, fastest and best-tested of the Absolute 12.x series.
Kernel boot image is 2755k.
reiserfs and ext3 support built in, along with USB mass storage,
HID devces (for usb keyboards and mice) and many mountable filesystems --
for the ease of mounting devices, including read/write to NTFS. (I have
backed-up more than 100 XP hard drives via a usb-ide adapter on Absolute
12.x now. Thank gosh for Windows users!
Xorg-7.3
With custom patches to xinit, vesa video, xdm, and installer script
updated to set "composite" to false, as otherwise things (especially
Nedit) get messed up.
KDE libs updated to 3.5.8
requied some re-write of customization code for URLs and email links.
Help pages now opened by KDE (and documentation on menu) via Dillo.
Dillo-0.6.6
threw in some code to eliminate orphaned file.xpi, bookmarks.xpi and
dpid(s) that were left running after close. Took up about
130k of memory each -- not much, but why waste it?
Firefox upgraded to 2.0.0.8
Compiled with headers and IDL files intact. Enables
dev builds of things like the mplayerplug-in w/o resorting to
gecko SDK. After installing MultiMedia packages (with installer)
it is a brick. Works for everything I tried.
MultiMedia installer
Changed ffmpeg build to create shared lib rather than the default
static. Solved some problems :)
GIMP updated
version 2.4 final. Changes to script-fus that I made are included
so that what is there, works. These include about half of what came
with GIMP originally, plus some others that I personally find very
useful. Sort of my favorites.
libiconv
Removed. Caused many problems. Lightens the load
Icewm recompiled
And some custom tweaking -- we now hae gdeskcal (a light, fast
desktop calendar) that appears when you left-click the taskbar clock.
I find this very handy. Right-clicking now oopens the time-adjusting
utility.
absusb
The utility to load USB stick when not auto-mounting. Corrected a
path in the script to correctly link USB-stick to the shortrcut
generated in MyLinux desktop folder.
absServices.py
Auto-mounting on/off switch now controls both hal and dbus
(hald and messagebus daemons)
abscreen
fixed screen size and refresh rate utility when updating refresh
rate. It was writing to xorg.conf and truncating the refresh value
(dropping trailing zeroes) in screen section so that it did not
match the modeline, and was therefore ignored.
ALSO -- turned off setting refresh rates for nvidia and vesa with
utility, as they did not work properly. For nvidia, even setting
"DynamicTwinView" to false in xorg.con (which enables xrandr to
get correct refresh rates) did not result in favoravle settings
-- they worked but the screens were not sized exactly to monitor
edges, so something was not quite right. f yu use the nvidia module,
then leaving the settings up to nvidia seems the best alternative.
icewm
included nvidia icon (for use if proprietary driver is installed)
Thursday, 10/11/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.7
Bug Removal
clearFstab (used to enable switching between auto and non-auto mounting
on Absolute) has been fixed, so that it will no longer remove any bootable,
swap or floppy devices from fstab which are /dev/sd
DevTray
Fixed mounting of volumes (such as USB STICKS) to mount them UID,
meaning users can mount them and WRITE to them properly.
XDM
updated to fix un-merged resources in custom startup.
fonts and language settings should now be correctly configured on GUI login
Font Update
Pulled bitstream fonts that were not used and put in DejaVu
for better language support. Also putting lots of graphical fonts
in GIMP extra package where they are actually used. (CD2)
HTMLpage and Nedit now both use a programmer's font called Dina.
guten-print
replaces gimp-print package for nice printing from the GIMP.
Most noticeable feature is that a PPD selection is no longer required
on printer setup, just pick you printer and away you go...
epdfview
has replaced xpdf for viewing PDF files.
mimetype in ROX-Filer and firefox handling changed to accommodate.
audacity
reintroduced. latest beta of audacity now builds with wxGTK-2.8.3,
with unicode -- happy days, it's back!
ROX-Filer
updated mime-type handler for OpenOffice writer
to again use swriterRox.sh script. make usage clearer
when OO not installed and when installed before reboot
(and path update has not kicked-in yet...)
etc package
Font changed on system dialog boxes
(usr/share/pixmaps/colorboxDOH.rc)
Multimedia file about, installer and uninstaller scripts added
Mplayer
updated (recompile) w/o skins or GUI enabled (due
to the fact that we now use smplayer frontend.) Winds up being
about 1/2 MB smaller package, despite inclusion of HTML docs.
Multimedia Installer
This is for those who are legally able to install DVD and video codecs.
Script in Icewm menu (as root) to "install Multimedia Files" downloads
some, compiles a lot, and installs all without any needed interaction.
Mplayer-plugin
updated to work with multimedia files, latest builds.
Required rebuild of firefox with all "dev" header files (see below)
Firefox
Updated to 2.0.0.7 - I have read not needed on Linux, but the header
files for Firefox were needed to compile mplayerplug-in. (i had
gotten lazy and installed prebuilt -- compile time is quite long...)
Also set handler for OGG files properly for audacious.
Checkinstall
Still use old version 1.5.3 (no bugs), however, updated the checkinstall
script to no longer automatically install the created package, default
arch type is now i486, and install/soinst.sh is not packages if empty.
HTMLpage
Updated with new base font set for default (Dina)
A small and very readable monospaced font. You can tell 1 from l and so on...
While in the HTMLpage code, I updated anything kicking out deprecation
warnings, before they became a problem.
Friday, 09/28/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.6
Midnight Commander(mc), Dillo web browser and ggradebook
added to default packages
xdm updated for nice graphical login, when desired

to include menu item to switch between
graphic login or text-based. Checkers menu item
changed for better display.
etc package
now includes script that switches login type
-- gets called from icewm menu
DevTray
Pulled AlsaAudio card handler. This originally had a bug with
SB Live cards, takes up memory, and does nothing Asolute does not
already do. Also new DevTray icon and tooltip, to avoid confusion.
Pyalsaaudio and Alsamixergui removed
Were used by DevTray, but no more.
GIMP
Updated to 2.4.0-rc3. Stable and actually faster than previous GIMP.
Pulled translations, which will now be on CD2.
ROX
Updated handler for GIMP in SendTo for images and PDFs.
Updated "Getting Started" information.
GQView
Back-dated version to 2.0.4, due to CPU-usage maxing out. Older
version more stable. Also tweaked "edit with" for gimp. Lastly,
situated HTML docs to show in DOCUMENTATION menu.
Libiconv
Back in to help with the language thing...
XDM
Updated to make font in shutdown/console options more readable.
chess and checkers
fixed both these x games. Chess had a bug with new gcc and
checkers was a configuration thing, also set up checkers display
better and put images it uses in /usr/share/games/xcheckers.
Tuesday, 09/07/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.5
ndiswrapper - updated to 1.48rc2
Kernel Update (yes, again) - this time to include built-in support for
USB keyboard during install of Absolute
Any patent-encumbered software removed
BCI-enable Freetype (replaced with non-BCI enabled)
libmad, lame, ffmpeg and libdvdcss removed --
SlackBuild for each available in /usr/src/restricted
as well as one to install the mplayer-codecs-all
(libdvdcss and mplayer-codecs require user download)
Dependencies for them updated - a52dec, faac, faad2, x264, xvidcore
Pidgin - updated to version 2.1.1
Fluxbox menu updated with some icons
Updated mailNotify.py (mail notification setup)
so user can toggle notification on/off
(default is now OFF)
linHDD updated to 0.5
Further stripped down code for fdisk customization (abs_fdisk)
Included diff file for code changes in /usr/doc/linHDD/source_diff
Convertor script for kde docbooks to html (docb2html)
mime type/run action incorporated into ROX-Filer settings,
so clicking on a docbook will convert it to HTML and open it with Firefox
Rebuilt kdelibs - still version-2.5.7, but I wanted to include source code
changes as patches with descriptions, and rebuilding with patches I was
going to redistribute seemed the safest path to follow.
ROX-filer updated - flac and ogg mime-handlers,
send-to script for converting mp3 to ogg
(if you install libmad, lame and ffmpeg from /usr/src/restricted)
Icewm - updated themes (since we enabled transparency,
might's well get fancy-like.) Also dumped themed start menu buttons
for consistency. Added 2 icons (Pidgin and term)
Sunday, 09/02/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.4
k3b FIX - was not working as non-root, and k3b setup, with all its
dependencies, was not an option. So cdrdao, readcd and cdrecord are
now all:
root:cdrom 4710
tested and works. Nothing to set up.
Kernel, modules and source packages again updated
compiled for smaller kernel as some folks had memory limitations
generic smp kernel with (not modules) of:
ext3 and reiserfs filesystems
iso9660, UDF, DOS, vfat, NTFS, NFS and Windows Logical Disc manager
EHCI USB (2.0), USB Mass Storage, USB HID and MMC (SD) cards
Kernel bzImage is now lowly 2542k
eliminated xfs, as it alone added 254k to the kernel.
kernel source properly "prepped" and used in place of original
Slackware version. Running "make prepare" on kernel source,
also jibes with nvidia documentation.
Edited ROX-Filer source code and recompiled 2.6.1
added all screen-related utilities to panel right-click menu
(diffs to all source files are included in /usr/doc/rox)
Added fuse and ntfs-3g for mounting NTFS partitions read/write
Rebuilt xorg xinit to make single .Xauthority file in ~/, instead of leaving
ultiple serverauth.xxxx files lying around (source difference included)
Updated icewm
added background color change menu item to "Settings"
Pulled all gtk-docs from all packages that had them
they will appear on CD2, extended documentation under GTK_Docs package
and if installed, show up under /usr/doc/gtk/gtk_doc_other
Began including the TENTATIVE doc project
which for now appear under "How We Do It" in the documentation menu
Removed gimp_extra_bypaul and put on CD2 list. Many folks won't need it,
clears 10MB of space, and will allow GIMP to start faster for basic users.
Response to request to keep iso of Absolute below 690 MB.
Added icewm menu items for apps on CD2 (they only show up when installed)
Added mime-type to ROX to handle .mp4 audio files (m4a and friends) with audacious.
If not encrypted they will play.
Updated abscreen
Added nvidia-settings to main menu
(will show up if you have a relatively recent nvidia proprietary driver build)
Wednesday, 08/22/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.3
Updated slapt-get and gslapt. Packages include:
gnupg-1.4.7 (which can coexist with instaled gnupg-2.x
Also added gpgme-1.1.4, gslapt-0.3.18 and slapt-get-0.9.12
Kernel source/header versions corrected, compiles nvidia driver OK
Adjusted mime-handlers in ROX for wma and wav files and
adding conversion scripts in SENDTO menu -- wav2mp3, wma2mp3 and flv2avi
Fixed error in DevTray where DATA DVDs were not "auto-mounting",
(was caused by missing png file)
Fixed modules install to properly match custom kernel
(had caused problems for nvidia-compiling folks)
Updated to Firefox-2.0.0.6, also updated xpdf, mkinitr, and the ati, nv and
vesa x-modules. Developer documentation for QT and xdialog moved to CD2 to
make space.
Frostwire package added.
abscreen updated to 2.2
NOTE: IF YOU RUN THE CD INSTALLER AS UPDATE the kernel packages will not be
updated. (kernel, kernel source and kernel modules) I changed the naming
scheme to an appropriate arch/version.
Tuesday, 08/07/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.2
BUG FIX: Where rebooting with sata drive wiped its entry in fstab
(so no boot if sata was boot drive)
fixed clearFstab, a script to wipe fstab entries of mountable devices due
to switching between auto and non-auto mounting -- so that it does not wipe
fstab entries for sata drives set in Lilo
ndiswrapper > updated due to compile error
Geting Started document shortcut put on user as well as root desktop.
Also includes 1st_RUN_INFO.htmlL file with some appropriate facts
Removed XTRA version of linux-wlan-ng
Removed grub for the time being
Wednesday, 08/01/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0.1
kernel recompiled to support 586 CPUs (Pentium-1 and K6-2)
K3B > 1.0.3 Updated for bug fixes, including one device error
that could prevent app startup
Firefox > 2.0.0.5
and seperated Absolute custom firefox startup sripts from
the firefox install, and put them in a/etc package. This
version has them in both firefox installer and the new a/etc package.
Java, jre > version 6, update 2
Sylpheed > 2.4.4
Lame and ffmpeg libs recompiled
ufraw plugin for GIMP now included by default

file name via unrar
putty added to Internet Apps
menu items added for putty, (and Azureus and kshowmail,
but not on installer disk)
GIMP 2.2.17 updated (gimprc) to include font path of data extras
Monday, 07/16/2007:
Absolute Linux 12.0
Auto-mounting implimented using udev/Hal/DevTray.
Actually, added devices are shown in a panel BELOW the
taskbar -- click arrow at right of taskbar and
it will slide out of the way, revealing the panel
with device icons. Single mouse click
runs the device default action -- right-click on icon
shows a menu.
Uses 2.6.21.5 SMP kernel. 586 is NOT supported.
(Don't try to install on a Pentium-I or a k6-2.)
Monday, 02/27/2007:
Absolute Linux 11.0.92
Corrected icewm to iconify audacious in tray only and,
once again, not run icewmbg in the background, although
icewmhint and icesh I left alone.
Icewm configured with the folowing flags:
--prefix=/usr --with-kdedatadir=/opt/kde/share
--with-cfgdir=/usr/share/icewm --disable-winmenu
--without-gnome --disable-shape
Turned off inetd and crond by default, but can easily be
turned on if needed via services run menu or making the
daemons executable in /etc/rc.d.
Memory usage on test system was 18MB on idle, second machine
was still 20. I think this is as low as I can go :)
Corrected this changelog. Corrected spelling error
in the installer. This is it until 11.1 series, which will
have the 2.6 kernel.
This update seems minor, but keeping Absolute running and
firing up Firefox with memory usage BELOW 32MB (which without
icewmbg it does) was rather important to me.
Monday, 03/26/2007:
Absolute Linux 11.0.91
Nothing earth-shaking.
I corrected all reported bugs since 11.0.9.
Everything on "updates" download page also included.
Additionally:
ROX, icewm were updated, but no real functionality differences in these.
I had new inclusions and just wanted to compile against later libs (since
original compiles.) Trying to clear out anything a bit aging for long-term
use and before 11.1.
Firefox is 2.0.0.3.
(Better audio mimetype handling and Sylpheed reintegrated into email sendto:)
linHDD is 0.3
(bug fix for possible broken-line df output)
audacious was upped to 1.3.1
(dep of mcs added for new config file, cd-playing still works nicely)
etc always echoes version (11.0.91)
(contains several of the custom Absolute scripts.)
GIMP has some extra stuff in "extras"
Monday, 01/29/2007:
Absolute Linux 11.0.9
--------------------------------------------------------------
Large-scale changes. Suggest reinstall for this version or you
will have to copy sudoers.new from package and delete the HOME
directory folders for mozilla and frostwire. Also the
/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.1 folder should be removed.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Switched from Azureus to ktorrent.
Quality/options not so bad as to offset HUGE performance gain.
The java client, Azureus, was a resource pig.
Updated Frostwire, needed to switch to Sun jre from Blackdown Java to
accommodate this. Blackdown is just too old... and Sun stepped up to
the plate by open-sourcing Java.
Rebuilt Firefox plugins and Firefox packages.
Added handful of randon splash screens.
Added Skype internet telephony app. Version 1.3.0.53
Put a libGL.la into /usr/lib -- just a text file used for linking.
Needed to compile KDE applications if nvidia driver is not present.
(nvidia driver installs the libGL.la file.)
Fixed CD data and DVD mounting from CD scripts
(which are included in the a/etc package)
cdir utility had a problem with data DVDs, so I
had to resort to a "mount" command to do some checking.
Because of this sudoers also had to be altered to accommodate
non-root users having access to the mount command in sbin.
[If you are updating you will have to update /etc/sudoers manually,
just copy sudoers.new from sudo package to /etc/sudoers.]
Also in etc-11.0.9, removed some wallpapers and sounds to make room,
moved firefox startup script out of etc package and into firefox
package where it belonged.
Updated mplayer from CVS to recompile with added libraries.
Libdvdcss, libdv, libmpcdec were added.
Rebuilt Audacity from cvs (01_26_2007) to accommodate libflac
and unicode properly
Updated abs_usb (fstab entry to set device mounting to rw)
GIMP_extras added 5 parchment patterns
In X -- fonts_scale added 2 fonts
Put font paths into gimprc for use with freetype plugin
Tweaked absAdduser.py, ensuring added user is part of "users" group
Make "SendTo" links in ROX for images to ImageMagick Display and kiconedit
Icewm update only affects behavior on initial boot. (Sound setup tweaked
to be a bit more explanatory if need be...)
Added a couple brief HowTos in the desktop "Help Me" link,
in the rox_filer package.
LAST 3 ARE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS/TWEAKING:
Turned off crond and atd by default -- but they also now appear in the
Services Menu (absServices.py), which can be turned on or off.
Took out > 2 virtual terminals by commenting out c3,c4,c5,c6 in /etc/inittab
(hence new version of sysvinit)
Fixed starting second instance of icewmtray from
~/.icewm/startup "icewmtray&"
(Since icewm-session started the tray for us already...)
Thursday, 01/11/2007:
Absolute Linux 11.0.7
Fix. Put in proper faad2 version for use with audio/video
conversions using ffmpeg. Also included needed libmp4v2.
Updated usbdrive (for usb sticks/devices) so as to properly
handle usb sticks as a user and when swapping between
different devices.
Include commandline unrar utility
Turned off sshd in services by default.
Monday, 01/01/2007:
Absolute Linux 11.0.6
Fix. Filefinder did not do other searches after a cancel.
Change. XMMS replaced with Audacious. Allows Audio CDs to be
played without any setup/playlist hacks and includes ability
(default) to play audio from CDs directly (no audio cord needed.)
All CD startup scripts that appear in MyLinux were updated to
accommodate, as well as mimetypes, mplayer and additional audio
support files.
Added/updated audio libs include ffmpeg, faad, faac, id3lib, taglib.
Aditional Mplayer support includes ability to play .flv
(Flash video, a la YouTube) standalone, mimetype set in ROX.
Fix. Email notification setup utility can handle usernames that must
include "@" character. (Thanks Noisome)
Updated. Firefox to 2.0.0.1. Automatic updating is turned OFF.
(Would not work for non-root users on Absolute, anyway.)
Monday 11/27/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0.5
Fix. Pulled last-minute USB-stick setup solution. Good idea
but my implimentaion conflicted with sata drives on /dev/sda.
Stupid oversight on my part...
I will find a solution after I have parts to test with.
Saturday 11/25/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0.5
Included Jeff's USB-stick mounting technique.
(You'll see a "USB" directory in MyLinux.)
Upgraders (but not first-time installers) will
have to add this line in their /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda /mnt/usb auto noauto,users,noatime,async 0 0
ppp and kppp included for dial-up modem users
File Finder utility completely re-written.
Uses a combination of python code and findutils
for fast and effective searching. Will also open
many applications with their default editors.
Ability to stop mid-search, select case sensitivity
and whether to look through subdirs. Other file options
include opening parent folder in ROX-Filer and to display
extended file information. Toolkit is Tk, opens and runs
quickly.
GAMMApage update.
Icewm menu editor recompiled and its documentation repackaged.
ETextReader replaced with Gutenpy
(text list format updated and could not accommodate with
the older etext reader.)
Friday 11/10/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0.3
Installer rewritten.
Should behave better -- allowing much better control of
the install process. Also there is option to UPGRADE
instead of install. When running SETUP, after you pick
your target and source partitions, you are given the
option to either INSTALL or UPGRADE.
Above simply uses a modified UPGRADEPKG in the installer
to update any of the base Absolute packages that have
changed since you installed your older version. Packages
you have added yourself will remain untouched.
Added collapse button to icewm taskbar, had previously
forgotten to add the option when I updated the version.
Appears on right hand side (by clock) and allows taskbar
to slide out of the way to the right.
Changed add user utility (absAdduser.py) script to
set the INITIAL group to users. Oversight had left
"users" without ability to play audio CDs.
Eliminated symlink to Python Tools that landed in /
due to earlier renaming of documentation directory.
Also corrected location of pyfloppy and pySqlite docs.
Added /etc/absolute-version file for possible future use.
Added a couple directory icons to ROX and...
Created a "getting started" folder in /usr/doc and linked to
desktop for root. Should come in handy for new users and I will
add to the contents as I go along... suggestions welcome :)
Friday 10/27/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0.2
Install now runs vidconfig script on first boot
to build a better xorg.conf, with probed monitor ranges
and correct video card driver.
Sound init (in /sbin/initinit) deleted if card not found
(So it will not continue to try after each boot)
Corrected font used by fluxbox Meta style (the default)
Icewm-session apps icehint, icewmbg and icesh renamed to *.bak
to prevent them from running on each startx. They were unused.
Done to speed things up a pinch.
Anagramarama has tweaked dictionary.
Friday 10/27/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0.1
Firefox 2.0 - updated from 1.5.0.7
A couple extra utilities added
Alsa sound preconfigured on install if card detected and supported.
Corrected problems with "Spooky" game modifications.
Completed repackaging of most everything to eliminate my
error of including a copyrighted name as part of the release name :(
[My bad. I wasn't trying to appropriate anything... Absolute being
really nothing more than a modification, I thought it would be
presumpuous to call it something else.
Because I want to keep the release numbers compatible with Slackware's,
anything I release between the minor numbers (11.1, 11.2, etc) will be
11.0.1, 11.0.2, etc.
Sunday 10/22/2006:
Absolute Linux 11.0 released
CHANGES MADE to Slackware 11:
KDELibs changed to accommodate HTML-only system
(the rest of KDE is not installed, just libs, gamelibs and a few programs.)
Also Firefox is set to open url Links, Sylpheed to grab MAILTOs.
DUE TO KDE DCOP errors I updated the modified LIBS to 3.5.5 --
tested beautifully thereafter :)
Icewm and Rox-filer are the default window/file managers,
with a sparse Fluxbox/Fox-PathFinder as a BU.
Several server/development/older applications removed in order to
replace with more commonly used desktop applications.
Many, many libs added in support of the additional applications.
Several configuration "helper" utilities and creative menu items used to
ease maintenance and setup of the distribution.
Documentation for several programs given places in separate documentation
menu. Eases access for some of the more commonly used apps, and there is
extended documentation for some of the programming capabilities, especially
the scripting variety.
Sun JRE replaced with older but more stable Blackdown SDK. lends itself to
development ability. Install ANT package and you can dev in Java.
(...and Firefox PLUGIN actually works on all tested systems.)
Custom icon library for Icewm. Some custom and customized themes. NO GTK2
theming.
APM module is LOADED. (See /etc/rc.d/rc.modules) allowing true power-down
on many desktops.
ROX-Filer compiled on-system and highly customized for application set.
Installer changed to bypass package selection and other tweaks.
Java had trouble with SUN jre, substituted Blackdown's jdk.
Played nice. Just prior to release I compiled MPlayer on-box (3.31) version.
Was finally able to stop, go back while videos were playing withou locking up
Firefox for several seconds.
